Political History / Career

I joined politics in 1957 in Highfield Harare at the age of 14. I was secretary for information and publicity in the Zanu Pf Youth League in 1963. I did my military training in Ghana in 1964. I became the Zanu PF provincial chairperson in in 1986 in Mash Central for 17 years. I was a government member for 14 years and a member of parliament for 23 years until 2008. I am a former member of the Central Committee and deputy secretary for information and publicity in the Zanu PF politiburo.

Brief biography

Cde Chen Chenhamo Chakezha Chimutengwende is a writer and campaigner in support of revolutionary Pan-Afrikanism and Global ecosocialism. He is the Chair

He served as a Member of Parliament for 23 years during which he was also a government Minister for 14 years in Zimbabwe up until 2008. He was elected at a UN Ministerial Conference in Geneva 1996 as President of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for a two-year term. In 1997 he was also elected for a two year term at the UN Headquarters in New York as Chairman of the United Nations High Level Environment Committee of Ministers and Senior officials; this was when he was Minister for Environment and Tourism.

He was awarded the “Medal of the Order of the City of Havana” in 1995 by the State Council for Cuba (Cabinet) as a result of his consistant support of the Cuban Revolution. He then became Chairman of the Zimbabwe-Cuba Friendship Association.

Cde Chimutengwende is a former lecturer in Journalism and Mass Communications and Head of the school of Journalism at the University of Nairobi in 1980-82. He served as Deputy Director and Senior lecturer of the journalism programme of the International Press Institute at City University, London in 1979.

He was Chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah Institute of Writers in London from 1971 to 1978. He started practicing Journalism in London from 1968 in London and is extensively published.

Cde Chimutengwende holds an M.A degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University Of Bradford, UK (1976). He received his Military and Ideological training in 1965 under the Ghanaian Army during Kwame Nkrumah's time. This training was carried out by experts from the Chinese People's Leberation Army.

He served as the Provincial Chairman of ZANU PF in Mashonaland Central uncontinuously upto 2008. The other positions he held in the party where Deputy Secretary for Information and Publicity in the Politibro and as a member of the Central Committee. Currently he is a member of the National Consultative Forum.
