The President of the Senate is elected in terms of section 122(1) of the Constitution, which states that “After a general election at its first sitting, before it proceeds to the dispatch of any business, it shall elect a presiding officer known as the President of the Senate.” The candidature for the Office is a person who has once been, or is qualified to be elected to the Senate.
Duties of the President of the Senate
The Office of the President of the Senate plays a crucial role in Parliament’s legislative framework. The President of the Senate is responsible for presiding over Senate sessions, ensuring that parliamentary procedures are followed and facilitating debate. The office further represents the Senate in official capacities, -and superintending over the promotion of the Senate’s interests and maintaining order during debates.
Term of Office of the President of Senate
The term of office of the President of the Senate is for the life of a Parliament. He /she can be re-elected at the end of the life of a Parliament for another term.
