The Deputy President of the Senate is elected in terms of section 123(1) of the Constitution, which states that “As soon as practicable after electing a President of the Senate following a general election, the Senate elects a senator to be the Deputy President of the Senate.”

Duties of the Deputy President of the Senate

The Deputy President of the Senate assists the President of the Senate in managing the Senate proceedings, ensuring the smooth operation of debates and discussions. In the absence of the President of the Senate, the Deputy President may stand in and ensure continuity of leadership during the legislative flow of business. In addition, the office may also represent the Senate at official functions or in specific discussions.
